Here’s Blaize, one of the core collective of volunteers leading a mini workshop at the Museum of Art and History last Friday. The museum hosts artsy interactive events every third Friday of the month. If you haven’t been yet, go check it out!

Saturday (TOMORROW) 11 to 5 at Abbott Square on Cooper St behind the Museum of Art and History.

The quilt pictured above could be yours! Made by Fábrica volunteer Christine Ellis, this beautiful piece of textile art will be raffled off to benefit the workshop on Valentine’s Day. Tickets may be purchased at the workshop during open hours; they cost $1 each or $5 for six. For the next two weeks the quilt is on display at the workshop. Stop by and take a look.

This quilt has an interesting story, like many of the treasures that come through our shop. The squares came to us from a local woman whose quilter mother had passed away several years earlier. The squares were expertly crafted, but were never assembled. Indeed, they likely would never have been assembled like this. However, as we sorted through the boxes of donated fabrics and quilt squares, Christine noticed how many of the squares used similar fabrics in different quilt square patterns. There was consistency in the colors and designs; they looked good together. So, Christine assembled the pre-made blocks, found complementary materials for the back and border, and quilted the project. The resulting “orphan block” quilt is finely made and has a lovely story.

1. We’re now using a snazzy google calendar to display the classes; hopefully this makes it easier to read and schedule.
2. We’ll have new OPEN HOURS ON MONDAY. Starting next week, Jenn and Blaize will be hosting from 4 – 7 PM. Wahoo!
3. We have a new teacher on this Calendar: Christine will be teaching QUILTING SKILLS at the Crazy Quilts class in April.

Here’s a new vocabulary word: NOTAFLOF! This is an acronym for “no one turned away for lack of funds.” This is similar to the idea of “sliding scale” but it means that we don’t set a minimum or maximum contribution and we don’t tell you how much we think you should contribute. Of course, we do need money to pay our rent, but we reject the idea that financial contributions are more valuable participation. We will thank you sincerely when you put bills in the donation jar. And we will strive to never make you feel that you should give us money. Thank you for showing up. And thank you for your support.

Congratulations to Scott who won the raffle for the crocheted squid! Blaize made this critter and it sure is a beauty. Thanks to everyone who bought raffle tickets.
